Beloved:
Come now, you who say,
“Today or tomorrow we shall go into such and such a town,
spend a year there doing business, and make a profit”–
you have no idea what your life will be like tomorrow.
You are a puff of smoke that appears briefly and then disappears.
Instead you should say,
“If the Lord wills it, we shall live to do this or that.” (Jas 4:13-15)
I know that none of us likes to hear that we are inconsequential. However, James sure hit the nail on the head: we are puffs of smoke that appear briefly and then disappear as suddenly.
Against the eternity of God, even a person who lives to be one hundred is nothing.
Therefore, since our time on this earth is so short, we should make sure that we are doing everything necessary to please the Lord.
Our day should not begin with, “What do I want to do today?” Instead, our day should begin, “Lord, what do you want of me today?”
If we do the work of the Lord, He will be pleased on the day that He calls us to Himself.
There is not much time. We cannot afford to wait for next year, or next month, or next week, or, even, tomorrow. We have to get on it today — right now!
FAITH ACTION: Spend some time in quiet prayer. Then, ask the Lord what He wants of you today. Be prepared to accept His request.
