Jesus began to reproach the towns
where most of his mighty deeds had been done,
since they had not repented.
“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!
For if the mighty deeds done in your midst
had been done in Tyre and Sidon,
they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes.
But I tell you, it will be more tolerable
for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
And as for you, Capernaum:
Will you be exalted to heaven?
You will go down to the nether world.
For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Sodom,
it would have remained until this day.
But I tell you, it will be more tolerable
for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.” (Mt 11:20-24)
“It’s not what you know; it’s what you show.”
Bishop Grutka used to say that all the time.
It is true.
Jesus is saying something very similar to that in the Gospel today. He is talking about how He is showing God’s love. He said that if some of the cities that were destroyed for their wickedness would have had the opportunity to see the things that Jesus was doing, they would have repented and been saved.
We have all seen mighty deeds from the Lord.
Some of them have happened to people very dear to us.
Some of them may have even happened to ourselves.
Have those mighty deeds made any difference in our daily lives?
FAITH ACTION: We are called to be different, not the same. Have you changed at all because of your relationship with the Lord? Or, do people have no idea you care about God?
