Family Day Of Service

1 Feb

“I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.”  ~ Rabindranath Tagore

We have celebrated much during this year’s Catholic Schools Week.  On this day, we wrap up our celebrating by asking our students and parents to put their faith into action.  Their families are encouraged to reach out and perform and act of service in our community.

There are many things that can be done in and for our community.  All you have to do is look to see.  There are local shelters for battered women/children, soup kitchens, or the humane society.  There are plenty of elderly people who never have any visitors at local nursing homes or rehab facilities.  There are probably elderly or shut-in people in your own neighborhoods who could use a friendly visit and maybe even a nutritious meal to share.

The magic of service is that, when performing it, we find out that we often get more out of it than the people to whom we reach out.  That’s God’s way of rewarding the cheerful servant.

FAITH ACTION:  Find some way to be of service to another today.
