I Gotta Wear Shades

“The future is as bright as the promises of God.”  ~ William Carey

The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades” is a song by Timbuk 3.  The inspiration for the song came when Barbara MacDonald said to her husband singer/songwriter Pat MacDonald, “The future is looking so bright, we’ll have to wear sunglasses!”  Pat heard the comment as an ironic quip and wrote down instead, “The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades.”

There has been a lot of discussion as to the meaning of the song.  Some say that it is a hopeful vision, others say that it is actually a sign of bleak times.  I don’t know.  It could be one, it could be the other.  I don’t know that for sure.  What I do know for sure, though, is that our future is so bright, we’ve got to wear shades!

Yes, our future.  The future that we enter into after our life on earth.  It is so bright because it is permeated by the light of Jesus Christ shining so brightly that it burns away the darkness of grief, doubt, despair, pain, anguish, and a whole host of other things that keep us down in our present world.

There is absolutely no reason to live in the darkness of sin.  The Light of Christ is all around us and, unless we close our eyes to it, will lead us in the right direction every step of our days.  Let the light lead you to the glory that awaits you.

FAITH ACTION:  Try your best to be led by Christ rather than follow the whims of the world.
