Whoever thinks he is standing secure
should take care not to fall. (1 Cor 10:12)
The vast majority of God’s people suffer from a very dangerous ailment.
It is called the “I’m too big for my britches” disease.
This, I believe, is a direct reflection of our sinful, mortal condition. We count on ourselves, we depend upon ourselves, and, in the process, we often count out the Lord.
However, not a single one of us — no matter how good we are — will ever get to heaven on our own.
We are totally dependent upon God for that great gift.
And gift it is.
We do not merit it.
We do not deserve it in any way, shape, or form.
It is a gift, freely given.
We have to be disposed to receive and accept that great gift.
We will never be disposed to it if we delude ourselves into thinking that we deserve it.
