Commitment

12 Feb

Commit to the Lord your way;
trust in him, and he will act.
He will make justice dawn for you like the light;
bright as the noonday shall be your vindication.  (Ps 37:5-6)

One of the huge problems facing us today is the seeming inability — or refusal — of people to make a commitment in their lives.

When I was young, it was generally understood that the job a person entered shortly after high school or college was the job from which he or she was going to retire.  When people committed themselves to one another in marriage, it was going to last.  When people gave their word and committed themselves to a project, they would keep it.

Nowadays, it is not the same.

Commitment seems to be more of a dictionary word than a reality.

Of course, as I have said often, the same things that happen to us in our day to day lives often mirror our faith life.

Because of the lack of commitment in day to day life, there are many who do not commit to the Lord.  Their faith is very weak and they waver.  They cannot seem to follow the Lord with any constancy whatsoever.

The psalmist reminds us that we need to commit to the Lord because, in doing so, God commits Himself to us.

God’s commitment is real and eternal.

God created us in love.  In that same love He redeemed us.

He asks us to give ourselves over to Him, just as He has done for us.

FAITH ACTION:  Commit this day to the Lord.
