Making A New Normal

2 Jul

“Times of transition are strenuous, but I love them. They are an opportunity to purge, rethink priorities, and be intentional about new habits. We can make our new normal any way we want.”  ~ Kristin Armstrong

Yesterday, I was working on an important transition: from actively assigned priest to retired or, as they say, “senior priest”.  The transition that I was working on most importantly yesterday was medical.  You see, as an actively assigned priest of the diocese, I was under the same insurance plan as all other active employees.  However, when we retire, we are moved to a different plan/provider.  Additionally, our prescriptions shift from one mail order pharmacy to an entirely different one.

So, yesterday, I made the rounds of my doctors, providing the new insurance card to them and requesting that they transmit my current prescriptions to the new pharmacy.  There were a couple of hitches — current address or quantities — but those got resolved quickly.

It made me think about the many other transitions that I will have to consider early on in my retirement.  It also made me think about the kazillion transitions that I have made in my prior life and assignments.  Transitions always require change and change, as we all know, doesn’t come easy.  We like things to stay the same.  We like things to be predictable.  We don’t want to consider other options or possibilities.

But when we shut ourselves off from options/possibilities, we miss out on a lot that we could have experienced.

FAITH ACTION:  Keep open to possibilities in your life and do not be afraid to change.
