Goals

“You may be a redneck if… your lifetime goal is to own a fireworks stand.”  ~ Jeff Foxworthy

Jeff Foxworthy is noted for his “You may be a redneck” jokes.  He is noted, as well, for all sorts of comedy.  Today’s quote, however, certainly reflects the holiday observed today and taking place tomorrow: Independence Day.  We have all been prepped for this weekend for at least a week now.  This is the time of the year when fireworks are set off willy nilly, whether they are legal or not.

So let’s get off of the fireworks part of the quote and onto the more important part of the quote: “lifetime goals”.  It is truly important to have goals for our lives because those goals guide our many decisions in life.  Those goals make us who we are and shape what we do.

If our goal is to celebrate the Fourth of July, we’re going to shoot off fireworks, BBQ with friends, gather friends and family for picnics and the like.  If our goal is to be a disciple of Christ, we are going to pray regularly, worship regularly, and perform the corporal and spiritual works of mercy regularly.  Our goal shapes our choices.

FAITH ACTION:  What is your short-term goal?  What is your long-term goal?  What is your lifetime goal?  Clarify it for yourself and then get busy making the choices you need to make in order to make those goals realities.
