Let Go To Be Filled

18 Apr

“To be full of things is to be empty of God. To be empty of things is to be full of God.”  ~ Meister Eckhart

Let go of the things that keep you from God.

If you are not sure what those things are, you can easily use this as a guide for discernment:  if the things are of this world, they can keep you from God.  It really is that simple.  And that difficult.  Because, as people who live in this world, we often ground ourselves in the goods and promises of the world.  We don’t understand how the world can keep us from God because the world, with all its lures and traps, tells us that it is innocent and harmless.

Innocent and harmless, you say?  We are still in the midst of the Easter season.  Gaze back to the Sacred Triduum, specifically Good Friday.  Reflect upon the arrest, trial, passion, and death of the Lord.  After reflecting, go ahead and try to tell yourself that the world is innocent.  You can’t, can you?

The world promises us all sorts of things.  The world tells us that all of its things will fill us with all that we need.  We will never have to want.  We will be happy and fulfilled and satisfied.  Why then, when filled with the riches of the world, do we often feel hollow inside?  That is because the world cannot fill us with the treasures of God.

Only in God are our souls at rest.  Only in God will we find the treasures that we need that will fulfill us.  Only in God.

FAITH ACTION:  Let go of the things that keep you from God.
