You shall be my people,
and I will be your God. (Jer 30:22)
I know someone who says, quite often, “He’s so stupid he could mess up a one car funeral.”
That phrase sounds really stupid to me; however, it also smacks of a lot of humor and a lot of truth. Some people would have a hard time organizing a one car funeral, wouldn’t they?
How can someone mess up something so easy?
We seem to have done so nonetheless.
We have messed up, over and over again, the covenant that God made with His people. It was a real easy covenant. It only had two parts: We would be His people and He would be our God.
Simple?
Not really. Not after adding in a heaping dose of humanity.
Our humanity does not want to be beholding to anyone, mortal or immortal. We want to be in charge.
Now, if God’s covenant would have been, “I will be your God and do anything you want me to do”, we’d have a covenant that we would keep! But since God asks us to be His people, we turn away from the covenant. We don’t want to be anyone’s person but our own.
Do you see where that philosophy has gotten us?
Our world is ready to explode. Hate abounds. Disorder is the “natural” course of our daily lives.
Perhaps it is time to turn back to the Lord. The offer of the covenant is still “on the table”, so to speak. It is up to us to accept it.
FAITH ACTION: Decide this day whether or not you will accept the covenant offered to you by the Lord. If you do, live not for yourself but for Him today.
