Whatever gains I had,
these I have come to consider a loss because of Christ.
More than that, I even consider everything as a loss
because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. (Phil 3:7-8a)
From the time we are very young, we are taught about gain.
We are taught the skills and given the knowledge that we need to get ahead.
To “get ahead” becomes the ultimate goal for many people.
“Whoever has the most possessions, wins!” becomes the general attitude of life for so many people.
However, whoever dies with the most possessions is still dead.
All of our gain, all of our possessions, all of our power or prestige, none of these “buys” our way into heaven.
In order, truly, to get ahead, we must embrace the Lord, Jesus Christ. When we do so, He helps us, He shapes us, He changes us into something that He can use in this world of ours.
When we become His faithful servants, we have no other need.
