For behold, some are last who will be first,
and some are first who will be last.” (Lk 13:30)
A man died and went to heaven, where he was being shown around by Saint Peter.
As they went into the different districts, the man saw all sorts of sights. Beauty, wonder, majesty — he saw it all. Peter carried on a very lively conversation with him.
However, as they were walking along, they began to approach a very high wall. Peter began speaking in hushed tones. When they got next to the wall, the man noticed a faint murmur of voices coming from the other side.
“What’s that?” he asked Peter.
“Shhh, not so loud”, Peter replied. “The Catholics are behind that wall — and they think they’re the only ones up here.”
We like to think that we’re important. We like to think that we are the best. We like to think that we are the only ones who matter.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus dispelled all of those thoughts when He spoke about the people who would come to the master’s door begging to be let in for, surely, he would recognize them.
The response, “I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers!”
Do we want to be in a position to be welcomed into the Kingdom?
If so, we must become more concerned about doing the Lord’s will and not our own.
