The Festival Of All Saints

1 Nov

Beloved:
See what love the Father has bestowed on us
that we may be called the children of God.
Yet so we are.  (1 Jn 3:1a)

Victors.  Heroes.  Conquerors.  Champions.

We have many names for the people whom we admire in this life.

We want to be like them.  We try to emulate them.  We often dress like them, walk like them, talk like them.

Look at any child or teen and you will be able to figure out quite quickly who their favorite sports person, actor, or music performer is because they will be wearing something the identifies with them.

Today is the Festival of All Saints.

They are our heroes.

They are people we admire.

They are people we hope to emulate.

In our lives, we have picked the name of a saint for our Confirmation.  We often try to act like that saint.  I know I often act like mine:  lost and confused.  (My Confirmation name is Peter!)

The saints are all those souls who are now in heaven with God.

We want to be like them and often fear that we will never make it because God may not like us.

That is why the second reading today is so comforting:  We are the children of God!

Reflect upon the saints this day.  Think about your hero(es).  Do all that you can to act like that saint or those saints today.

FAITH ACTION:  In prayer this day, ask the saints to intercede for you that their victory, one day, may be yours as well.
