“I don’t even think about a retirement program because I’m working for the Lord, for the Almighty. And even thought the Lord’s pay isn’t very high, his retirement program is, you might say, out of this world.” ~ George Foreman
Over the past few weeks, there have been a lot of things written about changing the retirement age again. In order to “fix” social security, because people are living longer, because there are less workers paying in to social security, et cetera, the reasons for an increased retirement age go on and on.
That makes those who are close to retirement fidget. They are concerned because they have worked for so long and now have plans. Their plans certainly do not include working for a couple more years.
The question could be asked: why do we work? What plans do we have for our future? What will we do upon retirement? Will we continue to be productive?
When we ask those questions, we also need to take a deeper look at ourselves. While we may “retire” from a working day world, we cannot retire from our responsibilities to one another and to the Lord. Being a Christian is a full-time job and one from which we cannot retire. That is, at least, until we die.
But, as George Foreman quipped, then, our retirement will be out of this world!
Just as people sometime get tired of their daily work, some people get tired of doing the right thing and saying the right thing. They sometimes long to “retire” from being Christian. They might think that, at least for a day or two, it would be nice to forget about being good and just join the world around them.
That is not the way to live nor the way to be. We must work hard at being Christian. Jesus never said that it would be easy. He just promised that He would walk with us if we asked Him to.
Be busy about the work of the Lord this day. On the day of your “retirement”, then, you will not be disappointed.
FAITH ACTION: Examine how well you have been living as a Christian. Figure out how you should do better. If needed, make it a point to go to confession today.
