He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
and has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever. (Lk 1:50-55)
We are pretty sure of one thing: people break promises.
Because of that realization — which usually comes to us very early in our lives — we begin to distrust most everybody, including God.
However, even though we may fail to keep our promises, God never has failed and never will fail to keep His.
He promised many things in salvation history.
He promised to send a Messiah. He made good on that promise when He sent His Son.
His Son promised to free us from sin and death. He made good on that promise when He died on the cross and rose from the dead.
He promised that we would never be alone. He made good on that promise when He sent the Holy Spirit into our lives.
God is a promise keeper.
We can always rely on that.
FAITH ACTION: Have you made a promise to someone and not kept it? Is there still time to make good on your promise? Be a person of your word this day.
