O Wisdom of our God Most High,
guiding creation with power and love:
come to teach us the path of knowledge!
Today begins what the Church calls “Late Advent Weekdays”, specifically, the final seven days of preparation for Christmas. On these days, we highlight the “O Antiphons”, called thus because of the antiphons that are chanted before the Magnificat of evening prayer.
The O Antiphon for December 17th is “O Wisdom”.
Wisdom is the knowledge of divine things. It is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and is also a virtue.
Through wisdom, we judge the things of this world through the eyes of God.
Sadly, wisdom is often lacking among God’s people. That is so because we do not often judge the things of this world through the eyes of God but, rather, through our own eyes, for our own ends and purposes.
If we are to be God’s people, we need to view this world through His eyes.
FAITH ACTION: While in prayer, sing (or recite) to yourself:
O come, Thou Wisdom from on high,
Who orders all things mightily;
To us the path of knowledge show,
And teach us in her ways to go.
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
