When they hand you over,
do not worry about how you are to speak
or what you are to say.
You will be given at that moment what you are to say.
For it will not be you who speak
but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. (Mt 10:19-20)
Jesus was giving instructions to His disciples in today’s Gospel. He warned them about the world into which He was sending them.
However, He also promised incredible help: “Do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say.”
You may think that is an empty promise.
I can tell you, however, that it happens all the time.
There are many examples in the lives of the saints where they were brought before someone and needed to testify. They had no idea what there were going to say. But, they trusted in the Lord, opened their mouths, and words came out that they would never have thought to say.
When we allow God to use us, God does. It really is as simple as that.
FAITH ACTION: There are times that we do not know what to say to a family member or co-worker in regard to the faith. Not knowing, we tend to clam up. Today, if the occasion presents itself, ask the Lord to give you the words to say and speak to that person.
