“I didn’t come this far, to only come this far.” ~ Unknown
Have you settled in life? The seems to be a targeted goal for everyone. I know that I heard it quite often when I was growing up. We were told that we needed to decided how we would be settled later in our lives. The idea of being settled always appeared to me to mean that there would be no more forward movement. Once we were settled, we found a place for ourselves, we didn’t need to plan ahead.
Can we afford to be “settled” in our faith lives? Are we not called to look ahead, to ask ourselves what more we can do? Are there not more people out there who need our help? Are there not more people out there who have not heard about Jesus? Are there not more people out there “sitting on the fence” in terms of their own commitment to the Lord?
If we settle, do we not do all of them — and ourselves — a grave injustice? I think so. That is why today’s quote struck me the way it did. “I didn’t come this far, to only come this far.” That just says it all.
We may have grown leaps and bounds in the faith. We may have gone from doing very little to being one of the most out-going people we could be in the faith. Yet each and every one of us can give me, can do more, and can be more. We are challenged to look ahead, never merely to settle in place.
FAITH ACTION: Reflect upon the practice of your faith and ask yourself if there is any way that you can go farther this day. Ask God for the grace to do so.
