There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit;
there are different forms of service but the same Lord;
there are different workings but the same God
who produces all of them in everyone.
To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit
is given for some benefit. (1 Cor 12:4-7)
Today is the celebration of the birthday of the Church: Pentecost.
On Pentecost, the apostles were filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit so that they could go out — boldly — into their world, telling the Good News of Jesus Christ.
That was no small feat.
These were men who were locked away in fear. Their Lord had been taken away from them and crucified. Even though He rose from the dead, the apostles were keenly aware that the Romans, as well as many of their own people, were looking for them, in order to do away with them.
On the day of Pentecost, these frightened people received the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Gone was their fear. It had been replaced with courage and conviction.
They began to speak the praises of God.
As the did, they found that they were speaking in the languages of the many people in the city.
How could that be?
It has been said over and over again: with God, nothing is impossible.
FAITH ACTION: Pray to the Holy Spirit this day, asking to be filled with all the gifts necessary in order to fulfill God’s will for you.
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.
V. Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created.
R. And You shall renew the face of the earth.Let us pray.
O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
