The Lord God took Abram outside and said,
“Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can.
Just so,” he added, “shall your descendants be.”
Abram put his faith in the Lord,
who credited it to him as an act of righteousness. (Gn 15:5-6)
Abram was a downcast man.
He was elderly and he was childless.
His name — his lineage — would die out when he passed away.
In the midst of reflecting upon that, God spoke to Abram and told him that he would be blessed by God.
Abram’s response? “What good would it do” if he had blessings but no heir to whom to pass on his blessings?
God had a plan.
God was going to give Abram an heir and make him the father of nations.
The best human response to that would be to look God straight in the eyes, laugh, and say, “Yeah, right.”
Ah; but, that is not what Abram did. No, he put his faith in the Lord and we hear that his faith was credited to him as an act of righteousness.
Abram became a new person, Abraham. He became the father of many nations. He was considered a “just” man. There are very few people in the scriptures who were accorded the title “just”.
Why so?
Simply because he put his faith in the Lord.
As humans, we know that is easy to say but often so difficult to do. There are so many temptations to turn our eyes from the Lord. It is only in the Lord, however, that the fullness of redemption comes.
God is speaking to us this day. As He spoke to Abram, God has a plan for us. He wants us to follow His way.
