Yesterday morning, I found myself pondering the scriptures as I prepared to celebrate the all-school Mass.. The Old Testament was a part of the Genesis story of creation. The Gospel was about a people who had so drifted from God that they no longer saw themselves as they should and, therefore, were unable to see Jesus for who He was.
Then, for some inexplicable reason, my mind turned into a jukebox and pulled out a record to play, Return to Innocence by Enigma. I always find that song to be somewhat haunting and enchanted. It beckons people to be who they are without fear. Don’t be afraid to be weak, be strong when you need, cry if you must, but remember to be authentic, to be yourself, for that is the return to innocence.
We drift from our innocence from the moment we are born. Being totally immersed in this world, the spiritual world around us begins to blur and fade. We quit seeing the spiritual as we focus on the material, the things of this world. Doing so may make us successful in the eyes of the world but it knocks us off the path to the Kingdom.
Only when we return to the innocence of our hearts, when we remember that we are created in the image and likeness of God, can we begin to find the path once again. As we do so, we begin to live the way God wishes for us. We immerse ourselves in His love and begin to share that love with all around us.
What a wonderful world this would be if all people lived in the innocence in which they were created, if they loved unconditionally, if they cared for themselves and others, and if they kept themselves on the path to holiness.
It can be done. It merely takes a return to our innocence.
