Start Today

“The future starts today, not tomorrow.”  ~ St. Pope John Paul II

The sooner we learn this very basic principle, the better off we will be:  tomorrow never comes.  You see, there are so many people who wait for tomorrow.  They put off today because they say that there is always tomorrow.  Tomorrow is going to be “the” day.  But when tomorrow comes, it is no longer tomorrow, it is today, and people once again wait and say “tomorrow”.  If we keep perpetuating the cycle of tomorrow, we will never live in the moment, live for today.

Yes, John Paul II was a man of vision.  John Paul II was a planner.  He planned many things for the future.  But John Paul II was also a doer.  He made sure that he lived every day for all the promises that it contained.  He knew that today, properly lived, would be the key to opening up the promises of each tomorrow.  His ultimate trust in God and devotion to the Blessed Mother kept him rooted in today even as he gazed into the future.  He knew that the future began today and that if we do not begin it today we will never be able to realize it.

The reflection today may be briefer than most but it contains all that we need.  It reminds us to live today to the full so as to usher in the promises of the future.  It doesn’t take as much planning as some people may think.  It just takes a healthy dose of trust in the Lord and humility to accept that He is in charge and not ourselves.

FAITH ACTION:  Ask God to give you the grace that you need to live for tomorrow today.
