Savor The Flavor!

2 Jan

“Christmas is like candy; it slowly melts in your mouth sweetening every taste bud, making you wish it could last forever.”  ~ Richelle E. Goodrich

I saw this quote as I was preparing to write the Daily Reflection and I thought, “this person must know me!”  I have a feeling many of you feel that way as well.  At least any of you that really like candy.

It does not have to be just candy, either.  It could be a favorite beverage or a favorite food.  Sometimes, we just like the taste of something and we savor the taste, the texture, the flavor of whatever it is we are consuming.  We do not want that feeling to end.  Hmmm, come to think of it, I am that way with prime rib as well!

Christmas has a “flavor” to it.  Many people associate several senses to Christmas.  There is the smell of Christmas, particularly in the scent of fresh pine in our trees and garland.   There is the taste of Christmas, most notable in all the goodies that come our way.  There is the look of Christmas, shining forth in all the decorations inside and outside homes as well as on the city streets.  There is the sound of Christmas in all the carols that we sing and hear.

There is also the camaraderie of Christmas, exemplified in the many people we visit or who visit us on the day or during the season.

All these sights and sounds and smells and feelings of Christmas should still be fresh in our minds and present to us.  Unfortunately, many people may have already “put Christmas away.”  The day after Christmas, most radio stations went back to their regular programming instead of playing Christmas music.

We are still deep in the midst of the Christmas season.  Two days ago, we celebrated the Feast of the Holy Family.  Yesterday, we began a New Year.  Today, we continue celebrating the Christmas season and will do so until next Monday, the Baptism of the Lord.

Until then, let your Christmas flags fly!  Celebrate the wonders of the season.  Remind others of the glorious joy of Christmas by keeping the sights and sounds and smells of the season present to them.  After all, Christmas is not just a day.  Christmas is an entire way of life.

FAITH ACTION:  So that you do not lose the Christmas spirit, sing some favorite Christmas songs and/or reflect upon the birth of Christ and what that means to you.
