“Like Columbus in the olden days, we must gather all our courage. Sail our ships out on the open sea. Cast away our fears and all the years will come and go, and take us up, always up. We may never pass this way again.”
~ Seals & Crofts, We May Never Pass This Way Again
One of the biggest lies that we tell ourselves is: “If I did not do it today, that’s okay. I’ll always have tomorrow.” That is not true. For one thing, we may not have tomorrow. No one has a guarantee that he or she will wake up tomorrow. For all we know, our life may be required of us today or tonight. If we put something off until tomorrow, it may never come about.
Even if we are here tomorrow, “the moment” will not be. If we have a chance to help someone today but decide that we will wait until tomorrow, the person might not be here. The person may be far away and will never have a chance to benefit from us.
Even if we are here tomorrow and the person we were considering helping is here tomorrow, that person’s circumstances might have changed and that person might no longer need our aid. Or, that person might need something entirely different.
When we let a moment go by, we lose that moment forever.
How many of us have kicked ourselves in the past for letting moments slip by? How many of us have stated, “I should have said…” or “I should have done…”? How many of us feel awful because we have left things unsaid or undone?
It does not have to be that way. We can change any time we want. If we have left things unsaid and/or undone, that does not mean that we are doomed to do so forever. Today is a new day filled with new opportunities to make a difference in someone’s life.
The only question remaining is, “Are you going to seize the opportunity?”
FAITH ACTION: If you have the opportunity to help anyone along the way this day, do so. Today will never come again.
