Will You Testify?

19 Jan

John testified further, saying,
“I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven
and remain upon him.
I did not know him,
but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me,
‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain,
he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.”  (Jn 1:32-34)

Testimony: a formal written or spoken statement.

John the Baptist was called to give testimony.  Specifically, he was called to point out the Messiah.

John had no idea who the Messiah was, even though he had grown up with him since it was none other than his cousin, Jesus of Nazareth.

Yet, John knew that the Messiah would be revealed to him.  God had told John that, when he baptized the Messiah, he would see the Holy Spirit come down upon the Messiah.  That was the person John would proclaim.

It came to pass that John baptized Jesus in the Jordan.  After His baptism, the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus and a voice was heard from heaven declaring Jesus as the Son of God.

With that, John began his mission in earnest.

Make no doubt about it.  John was already busy with his mission.  He had baptized many people in the Jordan.  But, when the Messiah became clear to him, he began to send people to Jesus.

You and I are called to point out the Lord as well.  When we see Him active in our lives — and in the lives of others — we need to testify to His presence so that others may come to know Him more clearly.

Are you up to the job today?

FAITH ACTION:  God calls you to testify to His presence today.  How will you do it?
