Whatever The Cost

20 Mar

“What we see in Christ is sacrificial love. Merciful love. Love that values the well-being of others above itself. Love that will generously and fully pour itself out, whatever the cost, in order that the beloved might benefit, flourish, and thrive.”  ~ Krish Kandiah

Why are mothers often seen as so special?  It is all about the love that they have for their children.  That love probably mirrors the love of God more than any other that we experience in our lives.  A mother’s love is unconditional and self-giving.  It always looks out for the best in others.  It provides a feeling of safety and security for the child.

We know that love is not always present in all mothers and that knowledge hurts us because we inherently feel that it should be there.  Yes, there are dysfunctional families and that highlights more than anything else the love that we so much desire to see and how wounded we can become when we do not experience that kind of unconditional love.

Christ’s love is pure and holy.  It is sacrificial to the point of His death on the cross.  It is merciful.  Christ’s love values the well-being of others and is generously given to others even when we do not deserve it.  We can always count on Christ’s love.

Lent is a journey that challenges us not only to recognize that holy, unconditional love of Christ but to do our best to emulate that love and share it with others, whatever the cost to ourselves.
