What Are You?

“The things that we love tell us what we are.”  ~ Thomas Aquinas

Yesterday, we observed Memorial Day.  It is a day set aside to remember all of those who died in wars and conflicts throughout the years fighting to preserve our freedom so that we could grow and prosper as we please.  They did not go to war to die.  They went to war to ensure our freedom.  In doing so, they showed that they had a love so strong that they were willing to lay down their lives for others.

We are all motivated by strong feelings and beliefs.  If someone looks at what we do, they will see what truly motivates us, what makes us who we are.  It is hard to mask who we truly are.  Aquinas touches upon that in today’s quote.  A person of love will find ways to love and support others.  A person of peace will find ways to enable others to live in peace.

In the same manner, a person filled with hate, spite, or malice will not be able to hide their inner feelings.  Those feelings will pour forth in deeds that hurt others in various ways.  We all know people who make us uncomfortable whenever we are around them and we often do our best to avoid such people.

Many people question themselves.  They often wonder if they are really good or bad.  They wonder if they are lovable or redeemable.  If you ever question who you are, a quick and valid test would be to answer honestly the question, “What do you love?”  That answer will tell you everything you need to know.

Hopefully, the answer will tell you that you are a person of love and integrity who strives always to follow the Lord.  Yes, the way is often difficult.  Yes, we make mistakes along the way.  And yes, we want to remain close to God.  Let’s do it by loving one another.

FAITH ACTION:  Love with a purity and holiness that touches those around you with peace today.
