We Were Made For The Lord

“Our hearts were made for You, O Lord, and they are restless until they rest in You.”
~ St. Augustine of Hippo

In 1979, Kiss came out with the hit record “I was made for loving you.”  It was a sensation that stole the chart, proclaimed that “I was made for loving you baby, you were made for loving me.”  Some of us may not realize that we sing that song every moment of every day of our lives.  Our souls sing out to God, “I was made for loving you and I can’t get enough of you.”

Indeed, as Augustine of Hippo points out, our hearts were made for the Lord and we can never truly be happy until we rest in the Lord.  Our biggest problem is that we often fail to search for the Lord in our daily lives.  Because we are in this sinful world, there are many times that we listen to the clamor of the world which tries to tell us that we were made for it and not for God.

Make no mistake about it, the world has many lures that are quite successful in catching our gaze.  We may begin our day saying that we are going to serve the Lord.  However, as soon as we leave the house, we are bombarded with the world.  Our morning commute is filled with distraction.  We might become angry at other motorists, enamored by a fellow passenger on the train, tempted by a new product that we absolutely do not need, and the like.

Our souls cry out for God but our humanity often cries out for the lures of the world.  Falling for the temptation that those lures bring, we oftentimes choose the temptation rather than choosing the Lord.  What a horrible loss for us when we do so.

The wonderful thing about that is that God is always ready to forgive.  When we come back to Him seeking His forgiveness, He grants it freely.  And, with His forgiveness, God gives us a heaping amount of grace to resist temptation.  Hold on to the grace and resist temptation.  Do good rather than succumb to that which has the ability to destroy us.  Listen to your heart which cries out for God rather than listening to the calls of the world.  And know that God is willing to give you all the help that you need to overcome your struggles.
