We Move Too Fast

13 Mar

Slow down, you move too fast
You got to make the morning last
Just kicking down the cobblestones
Looking for fun and feelin’ groovy.
~ Simon and Garfunkel, “The 59th Street Bridge Song”

Our lives generally run on overdrive.  We rush from place to place doing way too many things at the same time.  We become so bogged down in what we have just done, what we are trying to do, and what remains yet to to be done that we often miss the world as it rushes by us.

I had the opportunity to think about that yesterday as I lamented the loss of an hour of my life with the beginning of Daylight Saving Time.  Oh, I know.  We will get it back toward the end of the year when we “fall back”.  But the time change can really disrupt us.

For myself, as I get older, I find the time change harder and harder to embrace.  “It’s only an hour,” some would say.  My body, however, said a lot more than that.  I do not know about you; but, I actually found myself back in bed later in the morning trying to catch up on some of the sleep that I lost.  I was too disoriented to keep going without a nap.

When time rushes by us and we do not do what we need to do to maintain ourselves, we can easily become disoriented.  I am not just talking about an hour’s difference in sleep.  I am talking about our spiritual lives as well.

Lent is a time for us to slow ourselves down.

We need to do that.

If we do not slow down, the fast pace of our lives can disorient us and we can find ourselves missing what the Lord is saying to us.  He does speak to us, you know.  It is just that we often are too busy to pay attention or place ourselves in an environment that is too loud and distracting for us to hear Him.

Slow down, you move too fast.  You’ve got to make the morning last…

FAITH ACTION:  Create some time in your day today to slow yourself down and quiet your environment so that you have the best opportunity possible to be able to hear the Lord speaking to you.
