We Are Not In Charge

1 Feb

“My relationship with my body has changed. I used to consider it as a servant who should obey, function, give pleasure. In sickness, you realize that you are not the boss. It is the other way around.”  ~ Federico Fellini

The relationship with my body took a drastic turn on Tuesday morning.  That was when a flu bug hit me over the head, in the gut, and in several other parts of my body.  I felt like I had been run over.  One of the things that bother me is that special type of headache that you get when you have a fever.  My fever (102 degrees) did not break until yesterday morning.

When we are well, we think that we are in charge.  We think that we have the world in the grasp of our hands.  We think that nothing can topple us.  And then.  When we become sick, we realize that there is very little that we control except, maybe, the distance we will remain from the bathroom!

I think that becoming sick once in a while is probably a good thing for us.  It reminds us that we are not in charge.  God is the one who is in charge of everything in the world, including ourselves.  Sickness can give us not only the awareness of our place in the world; but, it also gives us something very special: extra time to have some heart-to-heart discussions with God.

Too often, we distance ourselves from God.  In our lives, we become too busy, and maintain that hurried routine, to keep up a relationship with God.  Being brought low gives us that time to reconnect.

Do not wait to get sick to check your relationship with God.  Do all that you can to maintain your relationship with Him.

FAITH ACTION:  Do not let the lack of being in charge shake your faith.  Instead, ask God for the patience to accept the many things that you cannot control.
