We Are Not Alone

1 Feb

O Lord, how many are my adversaries!
Many rise up against me!
Many are saying of me,
“There is no salvation for him in God.”
But you, O Lord, are my shield;
my glory, you lift up my head!
When I call out to the Lord,
he answers me from his holy mountain.
When I lie down in sleep,
I wake again, for the Lord sustains me.
I fear not the myriads of people
arrayed against me on every side.  (Ps 3:2-7)

I think, at the heart of every person, there is a fear in us that we will have to face some things alone.  Some people fear having to face illness.  Others fear facing the loss of a job or the loss of a friend.  Still others fear to face death.

The reason that we do so is that we somehow have the mistaken idea that we will have to face these things by ourselves.  We fear that others will leave us alone.  Even if that were true, we are never truly alone, as the psalmist reminds us today.

That is right.  We are never alone.  God is always at our side.

That is the fear of many a soul, though.  We fear that even God will leave us alone.

How could that be?  Would the God who created us in His image and likeness ever leave us?  Would the God who sent His only Son to die for us ever let us go it alone?  Would the Lord who died for us on the cross and rose again to restore life ever abandon us?

You do not need me to tell you the answer to that.  The answer is “absolutely not!”  God will never abandon us.  He will never leave our side.

He will always be there, right next to us, leading and guiding us.  All we have to do is call out to Him.

FAITH ACTION:  Are you facing any fear(s) today?  If so, confidently ask the Lord to show you that He is present and believe that He will be there with you.
