We Are God’s Children Now

3 Jan

See what love the Father has bestowed on us
that we may be called the children of God.
Yet so we are.  (1 Jn 3:1a)

For many people, Christmas is already over.  It has been, for quite a few people, as early as the day after Christmas already.

But for us, the Christmas season is still here.

We have just finished the Octave of Christmas and now we find ourselves in Christmas weekdays as the season continues.  It will end with the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord a week from this coming Sunday.  This Sunday is the Feast of the Epiphany.

John wrote to a beleaguered Christian community trying to remind them about their status with God, the fact that they were God’s children.  This was an important message to them because they were being killed for the faith.  Many members of the community were denying their faith so that they could save their lives.

But John reminded them that they were God’s children.  He did not say that they would become God’s children some day.  He told them that they already were, through the great love of God.

And if they were God’s children, they had nothing to fear.

Ah.

That is the “take home” message for us today as well.

We are God’s children.

We have nothing to fear.

FAITH ACTION:  Bring to mind some of the things that make you anxious or fearful.  Turn them over to the Lord today.  Fear not, for you are His child!
