Wait For It

“That awful moment when you don’t see your school’s name scrolling across the bottom of the news after a giant snow storm.”  ~ Unknown

You know, you just know, that thousands of students were glued to social media yesterday afternoon as they waited for what they hoped would be the inevitable: the cancellation of school for today due to a severe winter storm. It was funny watching comments on Facebook from people who had seen other schools listed but were still waiting to see their own school announce a cancellation.

Life is a lot like that.  We spend an inordinate amount of time wishing and hoping for “good news”.  We often lament the fact that others have received the good news that they wanted while we were still waiting for our own.  That has led, at times, to bad feelings between people. “Why should one get something that I cannot have?” people often think.  That is such a reflection of our tainted human nature.

Today will be off for a lot of students and, perhaps, many employees.  What will you do with the day?  Will you think about those who have to be out in this weather?  What about all of those who are making a commute because they have to go to work or to school?  Will you think about those who have to face the elements because they have no shelter?  There are many who are homeless and who have no choice but to try to make it through this storm and the next and the next.

If you are home today, be thankful for health and hearth.  And, remember those who have to face the weather today, especially those who do so in order to keep us safe: those who plow the streets, those who are emergency responders, et cetera.

FAITH ACTION:  Pray for anyone who needs to be out on the roads today, that they arrive at their destinations safely.  Pray, as well, for all those who have no shelter from the elements.
