Turn Back

“No matter how many steps you have taken away from God, it only takes one step to get back.”  ~ Unknown

I am directionally challenged.  Oh, yes.  If I am going someplace for the first time, there is a good chance, a very good chance, that I will get lost.  Even with my the invention of GPS, I’m still a train wreck waiting to happen.  A couple of months ago, I had to do a wake service in Illinois.  I knew the area from when I was first ordained; however, I had not been there in a long time.  I set the address in my GPS and followed the directions to an old warehouse, not a funeral home.

I passed it by and followed the “redirecting” directions to get back to the old warehouse.  After a third time, I got my phone back out and opened up Chrome so that I could call the funeral home and ask for directions.  Lo and behold, when the web page opened, I saw that I had put the wrong address into the GPS.  The funeral home was four blocks down the road.

Life is like that.  We might think that we are headed in the right direction.  We might be following the direction of others and trust their input and advice.  Yet, we might find that we are not where we wanted to be at all.  We have to scramble and look for help.

Our faith lives might be very much the same.  We might be trying to follow the advice of other people but what they are saying just does not seem to fit us.  Instead of being in a better place spiritually, we find that we feel far away from the Lord.  We do not need to look very far for help, though.  All we have to do is ask God to give us direction.

We might think that we have wandered far from God at times in our lives.  The great — and wondrous — mystery of God is that, all the while we were forging off on our own, God was marking step right behind us.  If we feel lost, all we have to do is turn around and fall into the arms of God.

FAITH ACTION:  Take a good, hard look at your life.  Have you drifted from God?  Turn back.
