There’s that famous song by Johnny Lee that proclaimed “Looking for love in all the wrong places” that came to mind as I saw today’s quote. We often look for happiness, fulfillment, love, satisfaction and a whole host of other things in all the wrong places. When we do, we end up frustrated, angry, confused, or depressed. What can we expect, though? We can’t find the right things in the wrong places.
There are many people who think that they don’t need God. They believe that they can find happiness, peace, and fulfillment on their own. They are wrong. Oh, they may find something that looks like happiness, peace, or fulfillment. Ultimately, as time wears on, what they have found will wear thin. Soon, they will see that what they found was nothing but an empty promise.
The only promise that can be fulfilled is found in God. He is the one who brings us true happiness. He is the one who gives us true peace. In Him we find complete fulfillment. In Him and in no other.
We often hear people tell us that we need to rely on God and not ourselves. We have learned that God alone can provide us with what we truly need. Yet our human nature struggles against that. Our sinful nature wants to go it on our own. In doing so, we only make it more difficult on ourselves. We need to learn to let go of the need to control everything around us. We need to learn that we cannot supply all that we need on our own. In short, we need to learn to trust God.
