Trust And Let God Speak Through You

10 Jul

When they hand you over,
do not worry about how you are to speak
or what you are to say.
You will be given at that moment what you are to say.
For it will not be you who speak
but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.  (Mt 10:19-20)

One of the hardest things for people to do is to trust.

In today’s day and age, we learn from the moment we are quite young that it is best not to trust many people.  “Stranger danger” and a myriad of other phrases and programs teach us to be suspect.  As we get older, our parents tell us to “read the fine print” in negotiating with others, indicating that others are not doing anything for us but for their own benefit, so we must beware.

That is a very sad reality for us.

As we mature, we apply all these things we have internalized to our relationship with God.

We become distrustful of Him.

In today’s Gospel, however, Jesus told His followers that they needed to trust in God.  Jesus indicated that terrible things would happen to His followers but that, if they trusted, God would give them what they needed to say to others so that the Word would continue to be spread.

Did that mean that Jesus’ followers would remain “safe” forever, that harm would never touch them?

No.

His followers ended up dying gruesome deaths.

But their witness, their example, and their trust inspired others to follow faithfully.

His followers realized that they were in it for the long haul, that their reward may not be in this life but in the eternal life to come.

We are called to trust in God as well.

We may have wonderful things happen to us.  We may have terrible things happen to us.  If we trust in the Lord, He will use our experiences to touch the lives of others and He will, in the end, reward us as well with eternal life.

FAITH ACTION:  As you go about your day today, trust that God is not only with you but that, if need be, He will speak through you.
