To Dig Or Not To Dig

12 Feb

“If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.”  ~ Will Rogers

All I could think is that there is a lot of digging that has been going on the past several days with all the snow that we have received.  Most of us are very familiar with the user end of a shovel right about now.  Some of us may have even found some more creative ways to utilize our shovels.  I know that I used mine to chop down many icicles around the house yesterday (and my back is “thanking” me for it today.)

Digging is very necessary sometimes.  However, there are times that digging might be counter-productive.  I love Will Rogers’ quote.  Yes, it would be counter-productive to dig when one is in a hole.  Yet, that is precisely what we often do.  We say something or do something that hurts another person.  Then, trying to “dig” our way out of the situation, we often make it worse. Digging is not what is needed in those situations.  Mending is needed.

This might be one of the things that we should look to do in the upcoming season of Lent.  Perhaps we should examine our relationships with other people — as well as with God — and see if we have said or done anything that has hurt any of those relationships.  If we have, we should consider ways to mend those relationships to make them whole.

Dig a hole or make something whole”  That is the question posed to each of us this day.

FAITH ACTION:  Pray for those whose words or actions have got them in deep with others, that they may find the ways to mend their relationships and move forward again.
