The Kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man
who sowed good seed in his field.
While everyone was asleep his enemy came
and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off. (Mt 13:24-25)
Today’s Gospel strikes close to the core for most of us, I would imagine.
Jesus talks about an enemy coming and sowing weeds among the good seed in a field.
When the weeds began to grow, the landowner was asked whether or not he wanted the weeds uprooted.
His response?
An emphatic “no”.
The reason?
Uprooting the weeds might uproot some of the good plants.
The servants were instructed to leave them go. At harvest time, the good would be gathered and the weeds would then be cut down and burned.
That is good, sound advice. However, for most of us, I think we go to the “uproot phase” right away.
We like to clear away anything that inhibits us or hurts us.
However, it may not be the wisest of moves.
We might mistake plants for weeds and uproot good as well.
We need to trust God to care for us, to nurture the seed planted inside of us.
We also need to tend the people in our lives as well, just as the Lord does to us.
Perhaps we can even turn a weed or two into a productive plant. After all, the potential is in each and every one of us!
