What Are You Going To Do Today?
When Jesus had washed the disciples’ feet, he said to them:
“Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master
nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him.
If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it.” (Jn 13:16-17)
One thing is certain. Jesus did not want “followers” who were passive, who did nothing. No. Jesus wanted people who would follow His example.
Jesus was not just a man of words, He was a man of action. He did for others, over and over again. When He was exhausted, He did for others. When He was persecuted, He did for others. When He was distraught, He did for others. When He was hanging on the cross, He did for others.
Jesus always looked out for the needs of others. His love was so great that no sacrifice was too big for Him.
He brought that home to His Apostles at the Last Supper. They were mystified that He would stoop to wash their feet. Some of them tried to keep Him from doing so. After He washed their feet, He instructed them that they needed to do the same for others.
We are generally very good about receiving. We like gifts. We like people doing things for us. We are, however, not very good about giving gifts. We are not very good about doing for others.
Jesus did for us. Ultimately, He gave His life for us. He invites us to be as “all in” for others as He was for us.
