Our Brokenness

“We are all a little broken.  But last time I checked, broken crayons still color the same.”  ~ Trent Shelton

I’m too stupid.  I’m too slow.  I’m too fat.  I’m too skinny.  I’m too whatever.  Hey, let’s face it, we’re all a little too something, aren’t we?  But that doesn’t make us good or bad, right or wrong.  That simply makes us who we are:  flawed human beings.

The only problem with that is some people allow their flaws to keep them down, to prevent them from doing things for others.  They don’t think they have what it takes to make a difference in another person’s life.  They couldn’t be farther from the truth.

All that they need to make a difference lies deep within.  Their flaws, their imperfections, nor their humanity will lessen the impact they make on another.  As a matter of fact, they might actually encourage someone who is just as flawed to think that they, too, can do good for others.

This lesson usually takes a long time in coming.  We are often made to believe that we don’t have all that it takes and that we have to wait until we have everything that we need before we do something.  That drive to be the best we can be keeps us from reaching out to others.  Don’t worry about being the best.  That’s never going to happen, at least not until we are perfected in heaven.  Until then, reach out — as our students would say in our recent musical — “warts and all.”

FAITH ACTION:  Ask God for the grace to see past your imperfections to all that is good and holy within.
