Observe God’s Statutes

15 Mar

Today you are making this agreement with the Lord:
he is to be your God and you are to walk in his ways
and observe his statutes, commandments and decrees,
and to hearken to his voice.  (Dt 26:17)

Agreements are very important.  They keep things in order.  They make life predictable.  The make life easier.

Agreements are made by ourselves or, sometimes, made by others for us.

You might say that our relationship with God was an agreement made by someone else for us.  After all, by the virtue of baptism, we became God’s sons and daughters.  However, for most of us, we did not make that original choice.  It was made for us by our parents when they brought us, as infants, to the church to be baptized.

That is why it was so important that we took responsibility for our commitment to God in our subsequent sacraments.  When we came of age, we received our First Confession and First Communion.  Later, we became Confirmed.

Each year, at the Vigil Mass of Easter and the Baptism of the Lord (as well as other occasions), we renew our commitment to God.  That commitment is so important.

If we keep in the front of our minds our intentional relationship with God, we will act as God wants us to act.

We are God’s children.

Let us live as His children, committed to observe His statutes, commandments, and decrees and to hearken to His voice.

FAITH ACTION:  Ask the Lord for the grace that you need to hold firm to His teachings and His commandments.
