Looking For Good? Be Good.

24 Feb

Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist,
there is disorder and every foul practice.
But the wisdom from above is first of all pure,
then peaceable, gentle, compliant,
full of mercy and good fruits,
without inconstancy or insincerity.  (Jas 3:16-17)

We spend a great deal of time in our lives looking for good — good things, good friends, good experiences, et cetera.

Many times, we fail to find them.

Why?

I would say, close to 100% of the time, it is because we are looking in the wrong places, among the wrong people.  We are looking through eyes (and hearts) tainted by sin.  We are definitely not looking through the eyes of God.

“Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice.”  That is so true.  It is just as true that if we want to find the good, we must clear away jealousy and selfish ambition and a whole host of other ills in our lives.

God is not going to have anything to do with the bad.  He is not going to reward evildoers.  He calls us to holiness, not to evil and destruction.

Let us spend our time today looking for good in all the right places.  Let us begin that search by making sure that we, ourselves, are good.

FAITH ACTION:  As you pray, ask God to be at the center of your thoughts, decisions, and actions this day.
