Keep Learning

“I’ve learned that I still have a lot to learn.”  ~ Maya Angelou

I think the greatest disservice that a person can do to oneself is to decide that there is nothing left to learn.  When we are young, we set our sights on getting out of school.  We may have been shocked when, after going to school for a whole year, our mom or dad told us that we were returned after summer was over.  What?  There’s more than one year of school?

When we realized that our parents were serious about the whole school thing, we began to apply ourselves.  We worked and worked to make it out of grade school.  Eight long years.  We were so glad they were over.  And then we heard the words “High School”.  Four more years.  And then we heard the word “College”.  Oh, come on.  Will this ever end?

For some, school ended with college.  Others went on to graduate school and post-graduate school.  Degrees were earned.  Initials were added after names.  And something became very apparent to us.  No matter how much we learned, we began to realize that there was a whole wealth of things we did not know.

The same can be said of friendships.  We may have known some people for a long time, for years or, even, decades.  Yet, somewhere, some time, we may have heard our friends tell us something about themselves that caused us to say, “I never knew that!”  No matter how much we think we know our friends, there is still something to learn about them.

The same can also be said of God.  The more we read, the more we pray, the more we meditate, the more we trust, we realize that we still do not know Him as well as we should.  Getting to know Him will take a lifetime.  But, that’s okay.  We have a lifetime to give.

It would be such a shame to die and come to the judgment seat of Christ and have to say to Him, “Excuse me, do I know you?”  As much as you think you may know the Lord, you haven’t even begun to scratch the surface yet.  Make some personal time to spend with the Lord today.

FAITH ACTION:  Ask God to reveal Himself to you in a way that He has not done before and ask Him to give you the grace that you need to recognize Him when He does reveal Himself to you.
