I Am A Sinner

31 Jan

Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness;
in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense.
Thoroughly wash me from my guilt
and of my sin cleanse me.
For I acknowledge my offense,
and my sin is before me always:
“Against you only have I sinned,
and done what is evil in your sight.”  (Ps 51:3-4,5-6a)

Yes, I am a sinner.

To say otherwise would be a lie.

We are all sinners.

Some people live their lives denying that very basic truth.  Others live their lives hiding their heads in shame because of that truth.

We need to acknowledge it, though, and then do something about it.

We acknowledge it in an honest relationship with God that includes the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  When we go to confession, we are truthful with the Lord, we seek His forgiveness, and we ask for the grace that we need to overcome our sins.  When we go to confession, our souls are cleansed and we can begin anew.

What’s the biggest problem with all of this?

Too many people are loathe to admit that they fail.  They certainly do not admit that in their relationships with other people and they do not want to admit that in their relationship with God.

However, if we do not admit our faults, our failings, our sin, we cannot expect to grow.  Failing to say we are sorry harms relationships with others and with God.

Asking for forgiveness is a sign of strength, not weakness.

FAITH ACTION:  Is there someone among family, friends, or co-workers with whom you need to reconcile?  Are you right with God?  Make an attempt at reconciliation today.
