How Does God Choose?

8 Jul

The names of the Twelve Apostles are these:
first, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew;
James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John;
Philip and Bartholomew,
Thomas and Matthew the tax collector;
James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus;
Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot
who betrayed Jesus.  (Mt 10:2-4)

When I was young, I used to think to myself, “If Jesus really were God, wouldn’t he know that He picked some of the worst people?!”

After all, if you think about it, His selection defies logic.

If He were to be an established “man of God”, why would He both with riffraff?  Why would He call lowly people who worked hard as fishermen or farmers?  Why would He choose “enemies” or those ostracized from His society such as tax collectors?

Yet, that was precisely whom He called.

And, you know what?

That is still whom He calls because, after all, He calls you and me as well!

We may not be the best or the brightest.  We may not be the most popular.  We may be despised by a fair amount of people.

However, Jesus saw something in us and He called us.

We spend the majority of our lives trying to figure out what it was that He saw.

That would be, by the way, the soul in us that is made in His own immortal image.

We do not see it because we are too busy looking at the substance of our selves: our color, our height, our weight, et cetera.

Let us try to spend this day seeing ourselves the way that God sees us: as beloved sons and daughters.

FAITH ACTION:  Just as He called the apostles, Jesus calls each and every one of us.  Spend some time in prayer with the one who calls you this day.
