A leper came to him and kneeling down begged him and said,
“If you wish, you can make me clean.”
Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand,
touched the leper, and said to him,
“I do will it. Be made clean.”
The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. (Mk 1:40-42)
God is a very loving God.
He gave us His Son.
His Son, out of great love, gave of His very life on the cross.
Before doing so, however, He spent a lot of time teaching His people, healing His people, raising His people from the dead.
Jesus, so often, did the unthinkable.
In today’s Gospel, we hear about one of those unthinkable moments.
Jesus dared to touch a leper.
Leprosy, in the time of Jesus, was extremely contagious. Once caught, there was nothing that could be done for the victim. The one who got leprosy was ostracized from the community and had to live either alone or with other lepers.
Jesus did more to the leper than give a word so that the leper could be healed. Jesus touched the leper as well.
Touch is so important to us. From many studies that have been done, we know that people who are not touched suffer from a great many ills. Babies who are not touched often withdraw from their world and may even die.
Jesus touched the leper.
He reaches out to us to touch us as well.
