God’s Messengers

“I could not have made it this far had there not been angels along the way.”  ~ Della Reese

I loved Della Reese.  I loved the snide and clipped way she could talk when her character was peeved.  I loved the warmth that could come from her as well.  I loved her larger-than-life character as Tess on Touched By An Angel.  I love her voice when she sang.  Most of all, I loved when she would get that certain look of empathy and care on her face, look at someone, and say, “God loves you, baby.”

Tess was an angel who was a supervisor to Monica, an angel caseworker.  She made sure that Monica towed the line and that she did what she was supposed to do:  give God’s message to designated people.  Touched By An Angel made a couple of assertions:  that there are angels and that they have been entrusted to give us messages from God.  Sometimes those messages were hopeful.  Sometimes the messages were challenging.  Sometimes the message were quite dire.  Occasionally, the message was even terminal as Andrew, the Angel of Death, would prepare his people to meet God.

If you’ve never seen Touched By An Angel on television, find it somewhere.  It’s out on streaming services or even available on DVD.  It is a series that is sure to fill you with hope and joy even as it tugs at your heartstrings.  Oh yes, it does that, too.  Make sure you have a box of Kleenex handy when you watch the shows.

Today is the Feast of Ss. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, the three great Archangels of God.  They were entrusted with very specific messages and roles as well.  Yes, angels are real.  They do bring us messages of hope and comfort as well as invitation and challenge.  They have told us, in all their varied functions, that God loves us.

Hold on to that message.  Don’t ever forget it.  God loves you, baby.

FAITH ACTION:  Ask the angels to protect you from harm as you try to live as a faithful witness of Jesus Christ.
