Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch,
a court official of the Candace,
that is, the queen of the Ethiopians,
in charge of her entire treasury,
who had come to Jerusalem to worship, and was returning home.
Seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah.
The Spirit said to Philip,
“Go and join up with that chariot.”
Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and said,
“Do you understand what you are reading?”
He replied,
“How can I, unless someone instructs me?”
So he invited Philip to get in and sit with him. (Acts 8:27-31)
In our reading this morning from the Acts of the Apostles, Philip is seen heeding the call of God.
An angel instructed Philip to proceed down a road.
Philip did as he was instructed.
While on the road, he encountered someone who was reading scripture aloud, but, without understanding.
Philip ended up instructing the man who, as the Word of God was opened up to him, was baptized at the side of the road.
Mission accomplished, Philip then went away to other places where he was led by God.
Our lives are a journey. On the way, we encounter many people.
Some of them already know about the Lord but, perhaps, they may need a little encouragement.
Others do not know about the Lord and may need a great deal of instruction.
We will never meet either of them, however, unless we allow the Lord to lead us.
FAITH ACTION: By word or by deed, be an example that can instruct someone in the faith today.
