Do You Believe?

Jesus said to them,
“A prophet is not without honor except in his native place
and among his own kin and in his own house.”
So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there,
apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them.
He was amazed at their lack of faith.  (Mk 6:4-6)

There’s no place like home.

At least, there shouldn’t be.

Home should be a place of comfort, peace, and security.  Home should be where we can “let down our hair”.  Home should be a place where we receive support and unconditional love.

Yeah, it should be all of that.

However, we know from experience, it often is not.

I remember when I first entered the seminary.  Many of my high school friends said, “You?!”  They could not believe that I was planning on becoming a priest.  Some of my neighbors had serious doubts as well.  My next door neighbor even had a bet against my getting ordained because he knew how much I loved being with the other neighbors and having a great time at parties around the block.  (He lost $200 the day I was ordained.)

The people that “know us best” often do not know us at all.

Jesus experienced that when He went home.

The crowds heard His words and saw His many miracles but could not believe that those words and deeds were coming from Jesus because, after all, they thought they knew Him.  The “Him” that they knew, however, was not who Jesus was at all.

In our own faith lives, we often think that we know the Lord as well.  Yet, when we are in real need, we often do not want to turn to Him because we say that “He cannot help us” or “He wouldn’t have time for us, He’s got more important things to do”.

Do you think you know the Lord?

You might need to think again.

FAITH ACTION:  Ask the Lord to reveal to you the times that you tend to doubt in Him.  Ask Him to increase your faith.
