Do Something About It

“If the world seems cold to you, kindle fires to warm it.”  ~ Lucy Larcom

Leave it up to a poet to give us the imagery of today’s quote.  Larcom was a poet, as well as a teacher and author, in the mid-1800’s.  Toward the end of her life, her writings took on very theological tones.  She found all that she had expressed was leading her to a closer relationship to God.  In her own unique way, she kindled a fire to warm the heart of a cold world.

What about us?  What talents or attributes has God given to each and every one of us to express not only our hopes and dreams, our fears and our struggles, as well as our triumphs and joys?  For some, as with Larcom, it may be by writing.  For others, it may be by doing.  For still others, it may be by speaking.  And yet, for others, it might be a unique blend of all the above.

One thing is certain.  We live in a dark, cold world that desperately needs the light and love of our Lord, Jesus Christ.  If we utilize the gifts that God has given to us, we will be able to illumine our world and warm it by our love.  It may not — okay, will not — be easy.  With God’s help, though, it can be accomplished.  All God needs us to do is say, “I’m willing”.  He will do the rest.  He will give us the grace that we need to make a difference in our world.

Kindle the fire of God’s love in the heart of another today by what you do or say.
